HISTORY
The Brandon Flying Club (BFC) was originally founded in 1929 as the Brandon/Virden Flying Club. In the early years the clubs’ facilities were located on Brandons’ North Hill, approximately where today’s “Purolator” building stands.
The BFC was incorporated under the Canadian Letters Patent on February 12, 1944. After the second world war, the club purchased hangar #2 at the Brandon Airport, which was used for pilot training under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during the war.
The BFC is still located in this original hangar, which was initially built as a temporary measure for the war effort, at today’s Brandon Municipal Airport. The current administrative facilities are housed in a lean-to on the hangar’s north side, which was rebuilt in the 70’s from all member-donated material and labour. The lean-to underwent major renovations during the spring of 2000 to accommodate the modern requirements.
Over the years of its operation, the BFC has trained thousands of pilots from all over the country, and many international students choose us to obtain their pilot license in Canada. During the peak of aviation enthusiasm of the 1950’s to 70’s, the BFC operated up to ten aircraft of its own at one time.
The Brandon Flying Club is a true not-for-profit organization, owned and operated by its members. A Board of Directors is elected annually by the eligible membership to represent their interests.
All persons using BFC facilities must hold a valid club membership. The fee is $50.00 per year for a flying membership. Please ask us about the details on Life and Sustaining memberships.
